Red Squirrel Walk
at Shap Wells Hotel

Join rangers Jerry Moss & Gary Murphy for a short walk to watch the red squirrels in the grounds at Shap Wells Hotel and see the fantastic work they are carrying out to protect the red squirrel habitat and create an amazing site for visitors to be able to watch and interact with these beautiful and charismatic animals.

The group became a registered charity in 2006 and has a growing network of supporters, members and volunteers plus dedicated ‘Red Squirrel Rangers’.

Individuals of the group had been volunteering to remove the rare grey squirrel prior to 1994. Sadly, it soon became apparent that the grey squirrel was becoming prevalent where they once never existed, and the first cases of squirrel pox presented in Cumbria’s red squirrel populations.

The walk is about a mile in length following fairly easy paths through the woods at Shap Wells Hotel.
There is usually plenty of opportunity to see squirrels up close.

Make sure you wear sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing to match the weather on the day. Bring a camera and binoculars.

Parking will be at the Shap Wells Hotel – see map below.

The walk is free to join – If you are able, please make a donation to PRSG on the day or through their website.
This helps them continue the vital work they carry out to protect our reds.

Location – Shap Wells Hotel, Shap, Penrith CA10 3QU
